A data team migrating to Matia shared that they found out their signup numbers were wrong from a Monday morning Slack message. Not a monitor. Not a dashboard. Someone in a bi-weekly project meeting asked why growth suddenly looked flat. The cause was a column type change in a source database, six days earlier. Nothing crashed. No pipelinefailed. The dbt models kept building on schedule. The numbers just quietly drifted, one join at a time, until they were wrong enough for a human to notice. This is close to the default state of most data stacks today. Detection lives in one tool. Transformation lives in another. Nobody owns the seam where a change upstream turns into a lie downstream. At Matia we spend most of our time on that seam. Schema and data quality checks that sit where ingestion and transformation actually meet, not bolted on after the fact. The real cost of a broken pipeline is never the outage. It is the six days nobody had a reason to doubt the number in front of them. Closing that gap is the job.
